Is Automation the beginning of revolution or it ends at that?

We have seen how computers have enhanced most of the traditional industries and leveraged automation as a part of Industrial Revolution 3.0. And now, as part of the fourth wave, the regularly used software would change radically in days to come.
Let’s start with present day state (lets name it as “legacy”) of software.

The “legacy”

Processes in an enterprise – have automation for their software and we have almost reached the software defined everything state.

Let’s take an example to understand this:

You wanted to take a cab ride. Earlier, you called the cab company, told them your home/office address, time, where to go, car type etc. Subsequently, the cab driver would have picked you up.
Now, how has “legacy” software application come to existence? For example, Uber application was created by automating the cab booking process (alongside doing other cool stuff). Take your favorite application and surely at the core, it automates some process.
In an enterprise scenario, software applications such as Outlook automate “Email Management” processes. Salesforce automates “Customer Relationship Management” process, Slack automates “Enterprise Collaboration” processes, and the list continues.
So “process automation” has always been the intention of any “legacy” software application. Only till now.
But, not in the future.

The “new”

Given a lot many of these processes have already been automated, what lies ahead as the next frontier for applications? How does the future of software application for Uber, Bank of America, etc. look like? What will be the differentiating features of Amazon, Gmail, Slack look like in the future?
Can the next generation software survive only based on automation? Certainly NOT. It needs to be much more than that.
Next generation applications should be more personalized, self-learning and more humane. And this is where the core DNA of applications will transform.
As I just mentioned, most of the software applications are highly reactive in nature. Going forward software will be more proactive and personalized. Why does it need to be so?
Huge amount of data, availability of super compute infrastructure (Cloud GPU etc.), smart algorithms and humane interfaces.

Some other traits of “new” applications:

  • Software applications will interact with users in “natural” seamless ways like chat, voice, gestures, and emotions.
  • Your mobile application’s responses will not be predefined and hence can become more personalized. This is also possible because your mobile app can collect huge amount of contextual, behavioral information about a user and process quickly. Netflix is a great example for automation — the more you use, the more personalized experience becomes.
  • Next generation applications will map right content, resources to the user in a seamless way.
  • The next push will be to act on one’s behalf. This will have huge productivity gains through automation.

Eric Schmidt once said that mobile is the future and there’s no such thing as communication overload. It is just that mobile apps are here to stay and get more intelligent and humane.
